Premarin
Premarin is generically known as conjugated estrogen. Conjugated estrogen is a combination of estrogens gained from natural sources. Estrogen is the sex hormone produced by ovaries in females. This hormone is important for several processes in the body.
Uses
Premarin is used for the treatment of menopausal signs like vaginal dryness, hot flashes, irritation and burning. Other uses of this medicine is that it prevents osteoporosis in women who have undergone menopause and it replaces the estrogen in females who have ovarian failure or other disorders causing low estrogen levels. Sometimes this medication is also used to treat cancer in men and women.
How To Use
Intravenously. For cyclic use - 625 mcg - 1.25 mg per day, alternating administration for 3 weeks with a break of 1 week, in case of menstrual bleeding start administration from the 5th day of the menstrual cycle, and from the 15th to the 21st day additionally use a gestagenic preparation (in case of prolonged absence of menstruation, treatment is started on any day). If necessary, on the 5-7th day of treatment, the daily dose can be increased to 3.75 mg, then it is reduced to 1.25 mg. Treatment of malignant neoplasms - 3.75-7.5 mg.
To prevent indigestion and stomach upset it is suggested to take this medicine with food.
Side Effects
Get immediate medical aid if you have symptoms of hypersensitivity to Premarin: trouble breathing, hives, swelling of lips, tongue, face or throat. Stop the intake of this drug and notify your doctor immediately if you observe:
- Lumps in breast
- Memory problems
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Liver disorders- stomach ache, nausea, tiredness, itching, and loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, dark urine, yellowish eyes or skin.
- Symptoms of heart attack- pain in jaw spreading to shoulder, sweating, and chest pain.
- Signs of stroke- sudden weakness or numbness, severe headache, vision problems, slurred speech and problem in balancing.
- Blood clotting symptoms in lungs- sudden cough, chest pain, rapid breathing, wheezing, and coughing up blood.
- Symptoms of blood clot in leg- swelling, pain, redness or warmth in legs.
Contraindications
Do not use this drug if you have any of the subsequent medical conditions: bleeding, liver disorder, unusual vaginal bleeding, a hormone-associated cancer like uterine or breast cancer, a history of stroke, blood clot or heart disease, hypersensitivity to estrogens, blood clotting disorder. Premarin may increase the possibilities of developing a medical condition that may result in uterine cancer. This medication should not be used for the purpose of preventing stroke, dementia or heart disorder as it may in fact elevate the chances of developing these situations. Using this medicine for a long time may also elevate the chances of blood clot or breast cancer. To ensure that this drug is safe for use, tell your chemist or doctor if you have:
- Cardiac disorder

Pregnancy And Premarin
Avoid the use of this medicine during gestation period. Effective birth control medicines should be taken if you get pregnant during the use of Premarin. Conjugated estrogens have the ability to pass into the maternal milk and cause damage to the nursing infant. This drug may also reduce the milk production in females. Avoid the use of Premarin during breast-feeding.
